Our Story
Mead "An alcoholic drink of fermented honey and water"
We believe that mead has a bad reputation as a drink for bearded men, hairy Vikings and history buffs. A decade or three ago, real ale had the same reputation issues and now look at the flourishing market of real ales and craft beers. We want to help drive a similar revolution for mead and we're going to do that with amazing quality mead that can compete with the more traditional choice of wine.
What is different about our mead?
There are meads on the market that taste of water with a hint of honey, ones that taste of thick honey loosened with a splash of water, ones made with honey dissolved into a wine or grain spirit and others where flavoured fruit syrups are added to a white-labelled base mead.
If you've tried mead before and didn't like it, then it's highly likely you've tried one made in the manners described above. Give mead a chance, and try ours.
Our mead is produced in a careful traditional manner with all ingredients combined and fermented by us to tried and tested recipes. We use time to allow our meads to settle and mature.
Why do we make mead?
Nicola, the founder of Sedgwick Meads, has been making mead for around 20 years. Feedback from friends and random taste testers has always been overwhelmingly positive with continual comments of "you should sell this" and "Where can I buy this?".
We tried to get off the ground in 2014 with a successful Kickstarter campaign, that got us the initial equipment and the refurb of our meadery unit. In reality that was just an initial boost in what has been a long road of legalities, regulations & licensing rules, raising a child and working a day job whilst (mostly) self-funding the meadery. Plus of course, we can't forget there was a global pandemic which shut down the beer festival that was our main source of sales.
